Heading West

There is an easy walk from Inverboyndie beach (Banff Links) to Whitehills. This takes you past caravan sites and children's play areas. On this walk you will pass the Red Well, built by the Romans, so that at spring and summer solstice, the sun's rays light up the interior.

WHITEHILLS

A traditional fishing port, which due to the down turn of fishing, has recently been transformed into a successful marina. The harbour is popular with local children and adults who fish from the lighthouse in the summer evenings. All you need is a line, hooks and prawns for bait.

PORTSOY

The newer town sits above a picturesque 17th century harbour, which has a gift shop and pub. Once a year it becomes the setting for 'The Scottish Traditional Boat Festival". Entertainment, food and not forgetting boats of all shapes and sizes bring the harbour alive at this time. Follow the road along to the new harbour where you can purchase salmon straight from the smokehouse.

FORDYCE

A pretty conservation village with an interesting graveyard and castle (not open to the public) - a delight to wander around. The joiner's workshop is a fun visit. Harps and other musical instruments are available for purchase.

SANDEND

The small village is ideal for a walk across the beach or down to the harbour past the pretty cottages. The beach is popular and safe. Children enjoy damming up the steam which runs onto the sand.

FINDLATER CASTLE

This castle or stronghold of the Ogilvie clan was built into the cliff side to protect the coast from marauding invaders during the Jacobite rebellion. While there, visit the sheltered and quiet Sunnyside Beach below.

CULLEN HARBOUR BEACH

visit the old harbour which is situated down the brae from the Bay View Hotel. This has a sandy beach with shallow water when the tide is out. Treat the family to Cullen's famous ice cream - delicious from the shop on the high street.

CULLEN BEACH

just outside the town on the right, park and walk along the beach to the Bow Fiddle Rock. Walk along the cliff top to Findochty, and then back along the viaduct to Cullen. A recluse lived in one of the caves for years, and survived on donations of food and by selling driftwood models.

From Cullen head up the coast following the coastal trail, but don't miss out the delightful harbours of the little villages.
