Macduff Town Trail

Macduff owes its existence to the sea. The ancient village of Doune of Down, later to become Macduff, comprised a cluster of fisherman's cottages strung along the coast huddled together between the beach and the braes and occupying the area now known as Shore Street and Low Shore.

The Earl of Fife and his successors set about the planned development of Macduff, commencing harbour works which were completed in 1783. Walk along the streets of Macduff and discover the history of its harbour and the fishing industry.

War Memorial

Without doubt the most prominent building in the town, the war memorial stands on the open park and play area know as the Knowes. Inscribed on the memorial are the names of 150 men from Macduff, who fell in the Great War of 1914-18, and 51 who made the supreme sacrifice in the Second World War 1939-45.

Macduff Marine Aquarium

If you have not already toured the Aquarium, we would recommend a visit to discover the fascinating underwater world of the Moray Firth. The Aquarium's central display tank is unique in Britain. There you can see a living community of fish, invertebrates and seaweeds. You can also enjoy hands-on fun at the 'touch pools'. 

Macduff Cross

Adjoining the Macduff Parish Church stands the Macduff Cross bearing the arms of the Earls of Fife and this inscription, "Macduff Cross. Rebuilt at Macduff by the Earl of Fife, 1783, when the place was constituted a royal burgh by George III. May it flourish, increase in number and opulence, while its inhabitants gain in blessings of life by industry, diligence and temperance."
