About Banff & Macduff

The area boasts stunning natural scenery with spectacular views along the Moray Firth coastline. Inland, the terrain is more gentle, but equally as stunning, as the River Deveron meanders its way from its source in the Grampian Highlands.

For the visitor there is an abundance of activities available with a host of places to visit and see. Activities include golfing, fishing, boat trips, walking, cycling and much more. Places to see include castles (The Castle Trail), Distilleries (The Malt Whisky Trail), the Moray Firth dolphins and many different types of birds from gannets to hawks.

Eating out is primarily traditionally Scottish, but don't be surprised if you find an international influence. Chefs here love the opportunity to use the freshest of locally caught seafood and adapt it to their own culinary skills.

There is a continual programme of artistic events and exhibitions held at Duff House Country House and Gallery, a splendid "Adams" mansion.

In the past, an exhibition of original paintings including the Singing Butler and signed prints by Jack Vettriano, a prominent Scottish artist was displayed in Duff House. This was the first occassion that the Singing Butler had been exhibited in public since its purchase from Jack Vettriano about ten years ago. The exhibition was opened by Jack Vettriano who also conducted a book signing of his latest book. A huge amount of interest was created, with over 12,000 visiting the gallery. The exhibition was held in conjunction with Scottish International Relief, and a figure of over £50,000 was raised for the charity from the sale of Vettriano's prints and book.

The North Sea Yacht Race takes place around the end of June each year and attracts a range of international competitors. To complement the race, shoreside activities take place around Macduff Harbour for the benfit of visitors and locals alike.

The Scottish Traditional Boat Festival is now one of the premier small boat festivals in the United Kingdom. This festival takes place in the village of Portsoy, approximately seven miles west of Banff, every June.

COAST, a festival of visual arts, is staged by the two towns in May each year.
